ORLD WAR II IN BALTIC AND NORDIC SOCIAL MEDIA

Abstract:

The paper focuses on the Wikipedia web pages of seven countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The aim is to analyze what kinds of similarities and differences there are in the image of World War II, and why. This qualitative analysis uses key elements of historical source criticism; in addition, comparative method and quantitative analysis are used.

In comparing the Wikipedia web pages of these seven countries, no single narrative of the war can be found. National emphases are clearly apparent and they distinguish all the examined web pages from each other. Through text, images and maps, the webpage of each country highlights aspects related to the situation of the country during the war, emphasizing their importance to the war as a whole. The text of each country also shows an understanding towards the choices made by the country and accordingly, the perspectives of those that were on the other side of the war are ignored. In this sense, these Wikipedia pages could be considered as constructs of a nationalistically tinged identity and positive self-image.

On the other hand, it should be noted that in spite of clear national emphases, these linguistically different web pages also have a lot in common, and there are no extreme national interpretations or sharp judgements that take a strong position on a right-wrong axis.

 

 

 

Rezumat:

Această lucrare se concentrează asupra paginilor web Wikipedia din ?apte state: Estonia, Letonia, Lituania, Danemarca, Finlanda, Norvegia ?i Suedia. Scopul său este acela de a analiza ce fel de similitudini ?i diferen?e existăîntre modalită?ile în care este redat cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial ?i care este cauza acestora. Această analiză calitativă folose?te elemente cheie ale criticii surselor istorice; sunt utilizate, în plus, metoda comparativă ?i analiza cantitativă.

Compararea paginilor web Wikipedia din aceste ?apte ?ări nu văde?te o nara?iune comună cu privire la război. Accentele na?ionale sunt foarte evidente ?i disting toate paginile web comparate unele de celelalte. Prin text, imagini ?i hăr?i, paginile web ale fiecăruia dintre aceste state accentuează aspecte referitoare la situa?ia ?ării respective în perioada războiului, subliniind importan?a acesteia în ansamblul războiului. Textul cu privire la fiecare stat arată, de asemenea, o în?elegere cu privire la alegerile făcute de acea ?ară?i, prin urmare, perspectivele celor ce se situau de cealaltă parte a frontului sunt ignorate. În acest sens, aceste pagini Wikipedia pot fi considerate constructe ale unei identită?i cu nuan?e na?ionaliste?i ale unei imagini pozitive de sine.

Pe de altă parte, ar trebui observat că, în ciuda accentelor clar na?ionaliste, aceste pagini diferite lingvistic au ?i foarte multe lucruri în comun ?i că nu con?in interpretări na?ionaliste extreme sau judecă?i categorice care adoptă o pozi?ie puternică într-un binom bine-rău.

INTENSIVE LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE SUMMER COURSE
Starting: in groups: from 1st to 13th of August. Individually courses are held all summer.
Duration of the course: The Course runs for 4-6 academic hours per day, with Language practice for 44 hours and Lithuanian history, literature and ethnology for 6 hours.
Languages of instruction: English, Russian, French, Italian, Lithuanian.
Place: in the center of Vilnius – Gediminas ave. 26.
Certification: students will receive a Lithuanian language Summer Course Certificate.
Separate groups for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students are planned.
During the courses various cultural program are planned: excursions in Lithuania, degustation of traditional Lithuanian dishes, ethno cultural events, visiting some museums, creative workshops with famous Lithuanian artists.

Time: 1-12 of August, in groups. All summer indivual courses takes place.
Starting: in group on August 1-12. Individual courses are held all summer.
Duration: 20 acad. hours (10 days, 2 acad. hours per day).
Explaining languages: English, Russian, Lithuanian.
Place: Gediminas ave. 26, Vilnius.
Certificate: at the end of the course every participant will get the LINGUA LITUANICA certificate.
Classes take place in small groups.
On Saturdays it is possible to go to excursions with parents.
